Who Am I?
I'm Francis, a curious wanderer with a knack for finding authentic travel experiences (and the occasional fiery chilli pepper) on a budget, and this blog is where I share my misadventures and tips to inspire your own explorations.

About This Blog (and the bloke behind it)
Greetings! I’m Francis, and travel isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a way of life that I share with my wonderful wife, Louise. We’re driven by an insatiable curiosity to explore the world’s most breathtaking destinations, from the sun-drenched shores of the Mediterranean to the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, and to fully immerse ourselves in the kaleidoscope of cultures and experiences they offer.
I’m a firm believer in thoughtful, well-planned travel, relishing the anticipation and the satisfaction of uncovering those hidden gems – the tucked-away trattorias, the local artisan workshops, the breathtaking vistas only known to a few – that transform a trip into an unforgettable adventure. My exploration of a new place begins with a desire to discover its unique local character. I’m drawn to experiences that aren’t always in the guidebooks, finding joy in the unexpected and authentic moments a destination can provide.
Passions and Interests
I am a devoted beer enthusiast, and sampling local and craft brews is a particular passion of mine. I love to delve into the beer culture of every location we visit, whether it’s finding a cozy brewery tucked away in a quiet side street or attending a lively beer festival. I’m also fascinated by unique events and festivals. I believe these offer incredible opportunities to witness cultural traditions and create lasting memories.
Family and Travel
While Louise and I love exploring the world, family is incredibly important to us. Our grown-up daughters, Allanah and Ceara, frequently join us on our adventures, and these shared experiences strengthen our family bonds and create cherished memories.
Balancing Travel and Life
Like many people, I currently juggle my passion for travel with a full-time job. Louise and I fit our adventures around our work schedules, maximizing our time off to explore new places. We also cherish the moments when our daughters can join us, creating special family memories. Looking ahead, we dream of a time when we can dedicate ourselves more fully to travel. We envision extended trips, such as a long road trip across Europe in a motorhome, the windows framing ever-changing landscapes, from the lavender fields of Provence to the dramatic fjords of Norway, allowing us to truly immerse ourselves in the rhythm of the road and the soul of each destination.
Havana via Huddersfield: More Than Just a Destination
My blog is named “Havana via Huddersfield” because Louise and I have a long-held desire to visit Havana. The city, and Cuba in general, hold a special allure for us, and we imagine a long, meandering journey there, exploring countless countries and cultures along the way. However, “Havana via Huddersfield” is more than just a potential itinerary; it represents our philosophy of slow travel – the belief that the journey is as important as the destination. It’s about taking the time to truly connect with the places we visit, to savour the unexpected encounters, and to allow the experiences to shape us along the way. It’s about the joy of discovery, not the rush to tick off a list. The final destination could just as easily be Hong Kong, Hanoi, or Helsinki; it’s the spirit of exploration that truly matters.
My Travel Aspirations
Through my blog, I hope to inspire others to pursue their travel dreams. I aim to provide practical advice, showcase innovative travel technology, and offer insights into unique experiences. I want to encourage my readers to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the world with the same enthusiasm and open-mindedness that Louise and I do. Ultimately, I want to help others create their own unforgettable travel stories.
The Unexpected Joys of Travel
I understand the challenges of balancing a love for travel with the demands of everyday life. Because of this, we’re committed to making the most of every travel opportunity, fully appreciating each moment. I remember once, on a short trip to the Lake District, we stumbled upon a tiny, family-run tea room after a long hike. The warmth of the fire, the aroma of freshly baked scones, and the genuine hospitality of the owners made that simple stop one of the most cherished memories of the trip, a reminder that the best moments are often found in the most unexpected places. Or, I think of a time in Madrid, when we ducked into a small, bustling tapas bar to escape a sudden downpour. We only intended to stay for a quick drink, but the vibrant atmosphere, the delicious, simple food, and the lively conversation with the locals kept us there for hours. It was one of those serendipitous evenings where you feel completely immersed in the heart of the city, a world away from the usual tourist traps.
