Craft Beer in Seville: Where to Find the Best Local Brews

Seville, a city renowned for its rich history, vibrant flamenco, and delicious tapas, might not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of craft beer. Traditionally, the city has been dominated by mass-produced lagers like Cruzcampo. But dig a little deeper, and you’ll discover a burgeoning craft beer scene that’s rapidly gaining momentum, fueled by passionate brewers and a growing thirst for artisanal flavours.

While Seville may be famous for its sherry and tinto de verano, a new wave of craft breweries and bars is offering a refreshing alternative for beer lovers. In this post, we’ll embark on a journey through Seville’s craft beer landscape, exploring some of the best breweries, bars, and shops where you can sample locally brewed IPAs, stouts, pale ales, and more. Get ready to discover a different side of Seville, one pint at a time.

The Pioneers: Early Adopters of the Craft Beer Movement

The craft beer revolution may have taken a little longer to reach Seville than other parts of Europe, but a few pioneers paved the way for the scene’s current growth.

Maquila Bar: Often considered the first true craft beer bar in Seville, Maquila Bar, which opened in 2012, is a must-visit for any beer enthusiast. This industrial-chic bar in the Alameda district is also a brewpub. The bar was founded by two friends who had a passion for craft beer. They started by selling beers from other Spanish and international craft breweries, but soon started producing their own. They serve an excellent range of beers, and also food, with the menu helpfully suggesting which beer best accompanies each dish. Their own beer is well worth trying. They also stock beers from other independent breweries.

Bier Kraft: Located near Las Setas, Bier Kraft is another early adopter, bringing a wide selection of craft beers to Seville. With a constantly rotating tap list and a vast selection of bottles, this is a place where you can always find something new and interesting to try. They also serve some very tasty food. Their knowledgeable staff can help patrons navigate their extensive beer list.

Hops & Dreams: With a focus on Spanish and European craft beers, Hops & Dreams, located in the centre of Seville, is a cozy and welcoming spot to sample a diverse range of brews. This is a must-visit location for anyone wishing to try out craft beers. They serve a wide variety, some of which are made in their own micro-brewery. They also stock beers from across the world, so you are sure to find something to enjoy here. They also serve food if you are feeling peckish.

The New Wave: Breweries and Bars Pushing Boundaries

Building on the foundation laid by the pioneers, a new wave of breweries and bars has emerged in recent years, further enriching Seville’s craft beer scene.

Cervecería Río Azul: This brewery, located a little outside the city centre, is known for its experimental and innovative beers. They often use local ingredients and collaborate with other breweries to create unique and exciting brews. If you are a fan of craft beers, then this location is well worth a visit. The staff are very helpful, and can guide you through the selection of beers they have available. You can also purchase some of their beers to take away with you, directly from their shop.

Gallo Rojo: Located in the city centre, Gallo Rojo is a cultural space that provides workshops, exhibitions and a co-working space. It also, however, is a very good bar, and serves up a selection of local craft beers. There is a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere here. They also serve food, and host live music.

La Jerónima Craft Beer: This brewpub is located close to the river. As well as a very good selection of craft beers, some of which are brewed in-house, they serve a wide range of food. They also provide a large outdoor seating area, and have been known to put on live music. It is a very welcoming and friendly atmosphere.

Beyond the Bars: Where to Buy Craft Beer to Take Away

If you want to enjoy some local brews in your own time, or take some home as souvenirs, there are a few places where you can find a good selection of bottles and cans.

Lupulópolis: This shop is located in the centre of the city. It has a large selection of local, national, and international craft beers. The staff are helpful and passionate about beer. It is well worth checking out.

Be Hoppy: This is another bottle shop, also located in the centre of the city. It has a large stock of craft beers, with some available on tap for consumption in-house, and a large selection available for takeaway.

Tips for Exploring Seville’s Craft Beer Scene:

Ask for Recommendations: Don’t be afraid to ask the bartenders or shop staff for recommendations. They are usually passionate about craft beer and happy to share their knowledge.

Try a Flight: Many bars offer flights of smaller pours, allowing you to sample a variety of beers without committing to a full pint.
Check for Events: Keep an eye out for beer festivals, tap takeovers, and other events that showcase local breweries.

Venture Beyond the City Centre: While there are plenty of great craft beer spots in the city centre, don’t be afraid to explore other neighbourhoods, like Triana and Alameda, for hidden gems.
