Thirsty in Seville: Your Ultimate Guide to the City’s Best Drinks & Bars

Seville, the sun-drenched capital of Andalusia, is a city that knows how to live well. And a significant part of that “good life” involves enjoying a refreshing drink (or two) in one of the city’s countless bars, bodegas, and rooftops. From traditional taverns serving local sherry to trendy cocktail bars and craft beer havens, Seville’s drinking scene is as diverse and vibrant as the city itself.

Whether you’re a wine connoisseur, a beer enthusiast, or simply someone who enjoys a good drink in a lively atmosphere, Seville has something to quench your thirst. This ultimate guide will take you on a journey through the city’s drinking landscape, exploring the must-try drinks, the best bars to find them, and the unique drinking culture that makes Seville so special.

The Classics: Must-Try Drinks in Seville

Before we dive into the specific bars, let’s start with the drinks you absolutely must try during your Sevillian adventure.

Sherry (Jerez): This fortified wine, produced in the nearby Jerez region, is a cornerstone of Andalusian drinking culture. It comes in a variety of styles, from the dry and crisp Fino and Manzanilla to the rich and sweet Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez. Sipping a chilled Fino with some olives is a quintessential Sevillian experience.

Tinto de Verano: This refreshing summer drink is a simple yet delicious mix of red wine and lemon-lime soda (like Sprite or 7-Up). It’s lighter than sangria and perfect for cooling down on a hot day. It is a very refreshing drink, and can be found readily throughout the city.

Cruzcampo: While craft beer is on the rise, Cruzcampo remains the most popular local beer. This light, crisp lager is ubiquitous throughout Seville and a refreshing choice during the warmer months. If you visit the city, you will see this beer everywhere.
Mosto: This is a form of grape juice, and is generally served chilled. It is very popular throughout Seville. It is typically served with a slice of orange, or an olive. This is a good non-alcoholic option.

Orange Juice: Seville is famous for its oranges, and the freshly squeezed orange juice here is simply divine. It is readily available in the city, and enjoyed throughout the day.

Traditional Taverns and Bodegas: A Taste of Authentic Seville

For a truly authentic Sevillian drinking experience, head to one of the city’s many traditional taverns and bodegas. These establishments often have a long history, a local clientele, and a focus on classic drinks and tapas.

Casa Morales: Stepping into Casa Morales is like stepping back in time. This historic bar, with its giant wine barrels and hams hanging from the ceiling, is a Seville institution. Order a glass of sherry and some tapas, and soak up the atmosphere. You will be transported back in time.

El Rinconcillo: Reputedly the oldest bar in Seville, dating back to 1670, El Rinconcillo is another must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic experience. The bartenders still keep track of your bill by writing it in chalk on the wooden bar top, a charming tradition that adds to the bar’s character. This is a fascinating place, packed full of history.

Bodeguita Romero: This family-run bodega is famous for its pringá montadito (a small sandwich filled with slow-cooked meats), but it’s also a great place to enjoy a glass of sherry or a cold beer. The pringá is delicious, and not to be missed.

Rooftop Bars: Elevated Views and Stylish Sips

Seville’s skyline, with its historic rooftops and iconic landmarks, is best appreciated from above. In recent years, rooftop bars have become increasingly popular, offering stunning views along with creative cocktails and a sophisticated ambiance.

La Terraza del EME: Located atop the EME Catedral Hotel, this stylish terrace offers breathtaking views of the Cathedral and Giralda. It’s the perfect spot for a sunset cocktail, but be prepared for slightly higher prices. It is well worth a visit for the views alone.

The Roof at Hotel Doña María: Another excellent option for Cathedral views, this rooftop terrace has a more intimate and relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy a glass of wine and watch the changing colours of the sky as the sun sets. This is a great location to visit at dusk, for some spectacular views.

Terraza Hotel Inglaterra: Located on Plaza Nueva, this rooftop bar offers panoramic views of the city, including the Torre del Oro and the river. It is in a prime location within the city.

“IN SEVILLE, EVERY DRINK IS AN INVITATION TO SAVOR THE MOMENT, TO CELEBRATE LIFE, AND TO DISCOVER THE SOUL OF ANDALUSIA.”

Craft Beer Havens: A Growing Scene

While Seville may be traditionally known for its sherry and local lagers, a craft beer scene is rapidly emerging, offering a refreshing alternative for beer lovers. One time, I was visiting the city with a friend who is a huge craft beer fan. I had done a little research before our trip, and had earmarked a few places for us to visit. My friend was initially dubious that we would find anything, but was pleasantly surprised by what we found. His personal favourite was Maquila Bar, and we ended up visiting a couple of times during our stay. He still talks about it to this day!

Maquila Bar: As mentioned earlier in my blog post “Craft Beer in Seville: Where to Find the Best Local Brews“, Maquila Bar is considered a pioneer of the craft beer movement in Seville. It is a must visit for craft beer fans, and serves a variety of beers, both of their own, and from other breweries.

Bier Kraft: Another early adopter of the craft beer trend, Bier Kraft offers a wide selection of local, national, and international brews. Their selection is very impressive.

Hops & Dreams: This cosy bar in the centre of Seville focuses on Spanish and European craft beers, with a constantly rotating tap list. It also serves up some delicious food.

Beyond the Usual: Unique Drinking Experiences

If you’re looking for something a little different, Seville offers some unique drinking experiences that go beyond the typical bar setting.

Sherry Tasting: Immerse yourself in the world of sherry with a guided tasting at a local bodega. You’ll learn about the different types of sherry and how they are produced, and of course, sample a variety of styles. This is a great way to familiarise yourself with this fortified wine.

Cocktail Workshop: Learn how to make classic cocktails with a Sevillian twist in a hands-on cocktail workshop. Many bars across the city offer this.

Flamenco and Drinks: Combine your love of flamenco with your passion for drinks at a tablao that offers dinner and a show. Several venues offer this combination.

Tips for Enjoying Seville’s Drinking Scene:

Embrace the Late Nights: Sevillians eat and drink late. Don’t expect bars to get busy until after 9 PM, and many stay open until the early hours of the morning.

Learn a Few Basic Spanish Phrases: Knowing how to order drinks in Spanish will be appreciated by the locals.

Pace Yourself: Especially if you’re indulging in sherry or cocktails, remember to pace yourself and drink plenty of water.

Try the Tapas: Most bars in Seville serve tapas, either free with your drink or for a small charge. Take advantage of this opportunity to sample some local specialties.

Be Open to New Experiences: Don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. You might just discover your new favourite drink!
